SAM BIRD
Sam Bird is a British racing driver, who is Test and Reserve Driver for Nissan in Formula E, acts as co-presenter for the Formula E TV broadcast, and commentates for the BBC Radio 5 Live Formula 1 programme.
Sam began his single seater racing career in Formula BMW in 2004, coming runner up in the series in 2005. He then competed in Formula Renault, and various Formula 3 and GP2 Series seasons, before holding a number of Formula 1 roles, including being Test and Reserve Driver for the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team. He also raced in the FIA World Endurance Championship, winning the LMP2 class in 2015 and finishing second in the LMGTE Pro class in 2016.
Sam competed in the FIA Formula E World Championship from Season 1 (2014/15), being one of the only drivers on the grid to achieve this. He raced with three of the top teams in the series – Envision, Jaguar, and then McLaren - until McLaren withdrew from the Championship in 2025.
Sam joined Nissan as Test and Reserve Driver in 2025 - bringing with him a wealth of experience across all motorsport categories and continues with the team today.
Sam is considered to be one of the most successful drivers in the history of Formula E - claiming 12 wins, 27 podium places and 6 Pole Positions over the course of his eleven seasons in the Championship.
